NC businesses want the field leveled when it comes to sales tax

(RALEIGH) -- Local retailers in North Carolina say the internet is creating an unleveled playing field and this is costing them business this holiday season. Hendersonville businessman Andrew Riddle sells equipment for seniors and the disabled and said customers will consider taxes as they are making buying decisions.

"I want them to get the best value and right now the best value is where they can buy a product and it's up to them whether they pay the tax or not," said Riddle.

Steve Ashworth of Ashworth Clothing and Shoes in the Wake County town of Fuquay-Varina said while he can provide a higher level of customer service, he is at a disadvantage when people are making decisions just on price.

"When you're talking about a specific item with a specific name that is equal all over the country, an item that doesn't require any extra service the playing field is just not level," said Ashworth.

The business owners talked with reporters in light of efforts to pass national legislation that would allow states to require out-of-state internet businesses to collect sales taxes the same way "brick and mortar" businesses already do.
