(RALEIGH) -- Gas stations across North Carolina will soon be required to provide information to consumers on how much ethanol is in the gas they are buying. The N.C. Rules Review Commission approved changes adopted by the Gasoline and Oil Inspection Board.
Some stations have been voluntarily posting the information, but the legislature passed a law last year directing the Inspection Board to create the rule requiring the information. The rule was approved this week and goes into effect June 1.
State Agriculture Department spokesman Stephen Benjamin said there is are good reason why consumers need to know about ethanol content in gasoline. "For some of their smaller equipment, chainsaws, weed eaters, there may be some brands out there that say in the owner's manual to not use ethanol," said Benjamin. "Certainly we have boaters that would prefer not to have ethanol in their fuel. People with small airplanes, they can use 93 premium gasoline in those planes. They would prefer to not have ethanol in there."
Benjamin added that ethanol blends are fine for most cars.
