(DURHAM) -- The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest 24-hour food drive by a non-charitable organization at a single location.
On Saturday, March 5, 2011, NCSSM will try to collect nearly 510,000 pounds of non-perishable food items to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern N.C. Chancellor Todd Roberts says the students will be actively involved. "They're involved in the planning of [the drive] and out trying to work with students at other campuses around the UNC System, and high schools in Durham, and around the state as well.
This year, the Food Drive is also competing for a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Project grant that will go toward helping fight hunger in central and eastern North Carolina. In order to win the grant, the food drive needs votes which can be cast through the Pepsi Refresh Project, by e-mail, Facebook and text message.
Last year, the Food Bank held a similar food drive, which collected over 320-thousand pounds. The record is over 509-thousand pounds.
