(HOPE MILLS) -- The North Carolina Forest Service has cited a man it says caused a large wildfire that's still burning in Eastern Cumberland County.
Marshall Hartsfield, owner of Woodland Management, Inc., is licensed by the state to carry out controlled burns. But the fire he set to clear some land had some embers escape due to dry and windy conditions, and they set fire to adjacent property, eventually burning 1,100 acres.
Brian Haines with the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources says that there is not much of a punishment involved in this crime.
"The most we can do is give him a citation, which is to pay court fees and whatever the judge deems the fine to be. Anything beyond that will be settled in civil court," Haines said.
All state wildfires are now under control
