(RALEIGH) -- Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue has vetoed a bill aimed at blocking provisions in the recent federal health care law. In a video posted on YouTube, Perdue cited several reasons for opposing the legislation, which has also been called unenforceable by Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper.
Perdue said the bill was contradictory to the federal constitution. "A state can't pass a law that is out of obeyance with federal laws, and this House Bill 2 clearly is," said Perdue.
Perdue added that it did not make sense for North Carolina to join a lawsuit challenging health care reform since 27 other states are already engaged in the process. "It's extraneous to North Carolina. This issue will reach the Supreme Court in a timely manner without North Carolina spending money and energy on it. It's superfluous."
Perdue vetoed the legislation early Saturday afternoon.
