(RALEIGH) -- State lawmakers fell short in their effort to overturn Governor Bev Perdue’s veto of legislation challenging the federal health care law. The North Carolina House on Wednesday narrowly sustained Perdue’s veto after a party line vote of 68 to 51. A three-fifths majority is needed to trump the governor’s veto.
Democratic Rep. William Brisson voted for the original bill, but not to override the veto. "I supported the Governor today and I felt like it was my duty to do so," said Brisson.
House minority leader Rep. Joe Hackney is ready to move on. I'm very pleased we're off that topic. It's a topic we never should have been on to start with. We should be about solving the problems of the state that we can work together on," said Hackney.
Perdue said she vetoed the bill because it was unconstitutional and not necessary because 26 other states were already challenging the health care in federal court.
