(RALEIGH) -- A Senate bill is moving up the chain that would amend the state ban on corporal punishment. The current ban on spanking applies to only students with disabilities unless parents consent.
The change would apply to all students according to Tom Vitaglione Action for Children NC. "Right now, by statute, districts can hit children and then inform the parents after the fact. We would like to turn that around and have parents actually approve it, give written consent that their child can receive corporal punishment," said Vitaglione.
Leanne Winner of the NC School Boards Association said her group opposes the move. They believe the choice should be taken out of parents' hands. "It should be the local board of education making that decision based upon what that community wants," said Winner. The Association worries that no response from parents would be taken as permission to spank.
