(RALEIGH) -- It may not officially be summer yet, but temperatures will certainly continue to make it feel like it through the middle of this week. Record heat is expected over most of the state on Tuesday with a couple of exceptions, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Brandon Dunston.
"In the Mountains or right along the coast. Right along the coast it should be a little bit cooler as well," said Dunston.
The heat index on Tuesday could reach 100 degrees in parts of central North Carolina. Even the actual temperature in the Mountains will be from the upper 80's to low 90's. Upper 90 degree temperatures are not out of the question in the Piedmont and Sandhills and parts of the Coastal Plain.
Dunston said the state could see some relief from the heat Wednesday night and Thursday in the form of isolated storms. He expects the sweltering high temperatures likely will not ease up until sometime next week.
