Voter ID bill gets tentative approval in House, likely heated debate pending

(RALEIGH) -- The State House wasted little time passing legislation that would require North Carolina voters to show photo identification in order to cast a ballot. Lawmakers voted 67-50 just before midnight Wednesday night after using a procedural move to shut off debate.

That decision drew some criticism from House Minority Leader Joe Hackney, D-Orange. "I don't care if it is 10 minutes ‘til midnight, this is wrong,” said Hackney. “Somebody ought to say it’s wrong. You ought not to be running this bill and hope everybody votes against it.”

House Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, later defended the decision to limit debate. He said the move allowed the House to take up many other bills on the calendar. Tillis also said the chamber will fully debate the proposal before a final vote scheduled for Thursday.  The measure would then head to the Senate.
