Nash Co. deputy killed in task force operation

(KINSTON) -- A Nash County sheriff's deputy was shot in killed in the line of duty Thursday evening.  Investigator Warren Lewis was working with the Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force when officers went to serve a murder warrant in Kinston.

Gunfire broke out and Lewis, 38 was hit, according to authorities. The warrant was being served in the murder of Thomas Hinton.  Authorities detained five people, including three wanted the June 2 murder.

The Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force is a cooperative between the U.S. Marshals Service and local law enforcement.  Lewis had been with the Nash County Sheriff’s Office for more than nine years. He had also worked as a U.S. Marshal on the task force for the last several years.
