(RALEIGH) -- The General Assembly could be doing more to reduce gas prices, according to AAA Carolinas. Spokesman Brendan Byrnes says legislators are debating a bill to cap the gas tax instead of letting it go in July, which could still have negative consequences for motorists.
"The one part of the gas price that they have any control over is the tax, and lowering that may be politically popular, but it lacks foresight and would severely limit the amount of funds that the Department of Transportation would receive," he said.
Byrnes said capping the tax would only save drivers about $7 for the rest of 2011, while the Department of Transportation would lose approximately $190 million in funding.
