(RALEIGH) -- A coalition made up of 33 different environmental organizations is pushing Gov. Beverly Perdue to block three bills passed by the General Assembly. In a letter to the governor the groups, including Audubon North Carolina, Environment North Carolina, NC Conservation Network and the NC Sierra Club asked Perdue to veto the legislation.
Margaret Hartzell of Environment North Carolina said the governor's stance on the environment makes them hopeful their request will produce a result in their favor. "We think that the governor's commitment to the environment and commitment to protecting its natural resources should point her in the direction of vetoing each of these bills," said Hartzell.
The the legislaiton would encourage offshore drilling, reduce the state’s rule-making authority and allow terminal groins on up to four coastal inlets. Hartzell said none of the bills are good for the state environment of the economy.
Republicans argued some of the changes would create jobs by reducing burdensome regulations on business. Supporters also said the three bills will not jeopardize the state’s ability to protect the environment.
