(RALEIGH) -- Governor Bev Perdue's eighth veto of the year was applied on Thursday to the Voter ID bill. The veto was expected.
House Minority Leader Joe Hackney said Democrats think Republicans were trying to suppress voting. "I'm sure the governor's objective is to make sure that whatever we have does not suppress the vote. We don't want people showing up to vote who are entitled to vote and have the right to vote but not allowed to simply because of some technicality," said Hackney.
Sen. President Phil Berger said having people show ID at the polls is a no-brainer, and most North Carolinians agree. Berger said Governor Perdue has put the interests of fringe elements of her political party above the wishes of the majority of North Carolinians.
