(RALEIGH) -- N.C. State University has announced plans to honor the memory of former basketball star Lorenzo Charles at their season-opening football game against Liberty on September 3. Tim Peeler of GoPack.com said Charles' legacy goes beyond making the game-winning dunk to win the 1983 national championship for the Wolfpack.

"He was an icon to this area.  Whether you were a Duke fan, a Carolina fan, whatever, you knew who Lorenzo Charles, you knew what that play was," said Peeler.

The N.C. State University basketball team will also pay tribute to Charles by wearing a commemorative patch on their uniforms next basketball season. Charles was killed Monday when a tour bus he was driving ran off Interstate 40 in Raleigh.
