WILMINGTON -- The Audubon Society wants beachgoers to share the sand with nesting birds this weekend. Conservationists want people to be aware that some birds nest right on the beach instead of in trees. They're launching the "Good Egg" campaign this weekend to educate folks that they could be sharing the beach with birds who've made their homes in the sand.
They'll be out in Wrightsville Beach on Saturday, asking people to be careful if they come across a bird's nest, and giving them an up close look at dozens of newly hatched birds on the beach. Ida Phillips of the Audubon Society says most people aren't familiar with the habits of nesting birds.
"Only 44 percent of the people that we surveyed knew that some birds nest in the sand on the beach, while 46 percent of the people surveyed said that birds nest in trees or away from the beach," she said.
