State Senate wastes no time with overrides

(RALEIGH) -- The State Senate quickly cast votes Wednesday overriding six vetoes by Gov. Beverly Perdue.  Democratic Senator Martin Nesbitt said Democrats could not agree with parts of the bill that would limit awards for malpractice victims and that is what led to the governor's veto.

"It was broadened to the whole hospital and got outside the emergency room.  That's in essence what the concern is there," said Nesbitt.

The Senate also said no to a veto on a bill related to offshore energy exploration.  Bill co-sponsor, Republican Senator Bob Rucho, said North Carolina needs the legislation in order to stay competitive with neighboring coastal states.

"We need to join the coastal states to get a fair revenue sharing option past Congress.  We can't do it by ourselves.  It's going to take everybody's effort," said Rucho. The governor has said that a provision requiring her to enter a compact with South Carolina and Virginia's governors to develop an offshore strategy is unconstitutional.

The Senate also voted Wednesday to override Gov. Perdue's veto of a measure that would end the practice of deducting the dues of members of the North Carolina Association of Educators directly from paychecks. Bill Sponsor, Republican Sen. Ralph Hise said the governor, in her veto explanation, appeared to be grasping at straws.

"The governor's message on her veto objected to a lot of things.  I guess she had to write something and didn't want to write, 'my friends don't like this,' and she also came up with a constitutional argument as she has on many other bills," said Hise. Senate Minority Leader, Democrat Martin Nesbitt, said government should not play politics in a situation like this.

Other veto overrides were on bills that would make technical adjustment to Medicaid regulation, regulatory reform and changing state unemployment benefits.  The House must now consider the six vetoes.
