(WINSTON-SALEM) -- The Wal-Mart Corporation has chosen 30 communities across the nation to get grants helping them to educate women about breast cancer. Winston-Salem, Charlotte and Greenville are among the cities chosen.
Dr. Durado Brooks is with the American Cancer Society. He says the grants will put advisers in place to help patients get information. "Community health advisers are people from these underserved communities, who can serve as trusted sources of information for people who live there. And they can help educate them about the importance of breast cancer screening," he said.
Brooks says it is estimated that by the end of this year, about 7,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 1,400 will die of the disease.
