(ASHEVILLE) -- In light of the recently reported rape in the Nantahala National Forest, authorities suggest you take some time to review safety tips before going out hiking or hunting.

Stevin Westcott with the US Forest Service says first and foremost, you shouldn't go out hiking alone. He says that can potentially put you in a vulnerable position. Westcott says it's also a good idea to approach any stranger with caution. He says you just never know if someone has been drinking or doing drugs, or may just be angry or agitated.

Westcott adds that quite often, people leave their vehicles unlocked. He says that's just inviting trouble. Another thing he suggests is not leaving your hiking or hunting plans in plain sight in your vehicle. He says you should, though, leave them with a neighbor or a friend.
