(RALEIGH) -- State Republican leaders are proclaiming victory after the U.S. Justice Department approved North Carolina's new redistricting maps, despite a technical glitch that left thousands of voters unassigned to legislative or congressional districts. Lawmaker will likely have to address the glitch when they return to Raleigh on Monday.
The Justice Department pre-cleared the voting districts that could give Republicans an electoral edge for the next decade. It is the first time in 30 years that the Justice Department has given pre-clearance approval for North Carolina, which has had a troubled history with redistricting. Since 1981, the Justice Department has rejected plans eight times.
Even with this latest development State Democratic Chair David Parker said the plan will re-segregate North Carolina, and analysts feel new lawsuits will be filed shortly.
