(WINSTON-SALEM) -- A Wake forest University researcher said one widely advertised smoking-cessation product should be pulled from the market, or at the least used only as a last resort. Dr. Curt Furberg said a poor safety profile of Chantix indicates there are many adverse effects from tied to the drug.
"From blacking out, which is obviously very, very serious," said Furberg. "There are reports of people driving cars and all of a sudden blacking out and ending up off the road. There are additional reports on violence and aggression, the risk of cardiovascular events, heart attacks and stroke and now they have this report on suicide and depression." The active ingredient in Chantix is also being tied, in other studies, to serious cardiovascular side effects as well.
The study appears in a recent edition PLoS-ONE. PLoS ONE is an open access peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Public Library of Science.
