(NEW YORK) -- Duke University's Mike Krzyzewski is the winningest men's coach in Division I basketball history. Duke defeated Michigan State 73-69 last night in Madison Square Garden. Krzyzewski said reaching the 903 wins record will mean more as time moves on.
"I think it will mean a lot when it's all over, and I don't know when that will be. I want to win a championship with each team that I coach, so I'm more into that because that's the moment you want for a group," said Krzyzewski.
The legendary Blue Devil's coach broke the record held by his mentor, Coach Bobby Knight. Knight was in attendance Tuesday night to see the win.
Many former Duke players were also there. Grant Hill was among them. He said many former team members wanted to be on hand to help Coach Krzyszewski celebrate the milestone.
"It just shows that it's about relationships," said Hill. "You've got guys that were managers, guys that were walk-ons, obviously some of the superstars, so it really is a family atmosphere, so to be able to share the night with him and his family and this current "D" team..."
Krzyszewski has led Duke to four national championships and 11 Final Fours.
