(WINSTON-SALEM) -- Doctors at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center say state Rep Larry Womble remains in critical but stable condition following last Friday's head-on collision in Winston-Salem. Womble is responding to stimuli, but is not speaking. He is aware that his family is present and recognizes their voices. Doctors say Womble suffered multiple broken bones and will undergo a long recovery period.

Winston-Salem police say Rep. Womble's car crossed the center line. The crash killed the driver of the other vehicle, 54-year old David Carmichael.

Womble and Carmichael were neighbors and the Womble family asked that the public keep the Carmichael family in their prayers. They also asked people to go out and help someone in need over the holiday season, and if possible, to donate blood.
