(RALEIGH) -- The panel looking at compensation for those sterilized in a state sponsored effort met again on Tuesday. The panel continued discussion on the idea of paying victims $20,000 to $50,000.
At the meeting, victim Elaine Riddick's son Tony Riddick said that compensation range being considered is unacceptable. "No, you cannot put a dollar figure on the process. You can't do that, but if you have seven to eight victims here, and they are telling you this is what they want and it is leaps and bounds from $20,000," said Riddick. He question why the task force was even recommending such a figure.
The state Eugenics Board authorized sterilizing about 7,600 North Carolinians deemed unfit to have children between 1929 and 1974. The state has confirmed 48 living victims.
