(HIGH POINT) -- A Guilford Co. high school has disbanded its boys junior varsity basketball team following a hazing incident. The team will forfeit the remaining games on its schedule this season and some players face criminal charges.

The incident took place after practice on Monday at High Point Andrews High School. Reports say a player was slapped in the face, hit with a plastic bottle and then placed head-first into a trash can.

Five of the players face criminal charges of hazing, and three of those players also have been charged with assault. All of those who were charged are under the age of 16.

A total of eleven players are facing some form of suspension, ranging from in-school suspension to a 5-day suspension out of school. The remaining three players on the 14-player squad who were not involved in the incident, will be allowed to play with the varsity team for the remainder of the season.

Some have said officials over reacted. But Nora Carr, the Chief of Staff for Guilford County Schools, said school officials wanted to send a message. "In Guilford Co. high school sports are about more than just wins and losses, there're about teamwork, about character, there're about teammates having each other's back and supporting each other.  They're certainly not about disrespecting their teammates, abusing their teammates, or any other student for that matter," said Carr.
