(RALEIGH) -- The North Carolina Association of Educators is still fired up about the override of a veto last week by state lawmakers. The action means NCAE members cannot have their dues automatically deducted from their state paychecks.
House speaker Tom Tillis said their was nothing wrong with the late night vote. "The governor called us back for the veto session. I made it very clear that anytime that we're in town and there is a way to it within the rules and within the constitution, we're going to take up every single veto override we have in unfinished business," said Tillis.
Governor Perdue called lawmakers back to Raleigh to consider her veto of a bill that would essentially repeal the Racial Justice Act. While the Senate did override this veto, the House didn't have to vote, so they tabled the issue.
Governor Perdue still contends the Republican-controlled legislature's actions were unconstitutional. House members were called back just after midnight to vote on a veto override of the legislation that impacts the NCAE.
