(RALEIGH) -- A task force has recommended that people who were sterilized under a state sanctioned program and who are still alive and verified, be paid $50,000 in compensation. The North Carolina Eugenics Task Force is also recommending a three-year statute of limitations for victims to come forward.
The practice of forced sterilization was carried out in North Carolina between 1929 and 1974. State Rep. Erline Parman, who co-sponsored a compensation bill, said she considers the $50,000 something to work from.
"I'm hoping that the leader of the House, Speaker Tillis, will look at the $50,000 recommendation and raise it to $100,000. That's a possibility," said Parman.
The recommendations, that also include education and mental health care, now go to the General Assembly. The Task Force hopes lawmakers will take up the issue next month.
