(RALEIGH) -- A police officer says the tragic death of a Millbrook High School student is a reminder that teens have to use safety on the roadways. Lieutenant Tim Tomczak of the Raleigh Police Department says it starts with keeping your seat belt fastened.
"We do suspect that neither one of them had a seatbelt on; there's some good evidence of that and that's what the crash report indicates. Really, that's the first thing that I would tell most parents is, 'Do what you can to protect your kids and do what you can to protect yourself, and the first thing you can do is buckle up,'" he said.
17-year-old Elizabeth Molloy was laid to rest this week after the jeep she was riding in slammed into a tree. The driver, 16-year-old Garrett Prince, faces a list of charges, including felony death by vehicle and possession of marijuana.
Also this week, 15-year-old Enloe High School student Carol Stamper died in a crash. Both Stamper and the driver of that car were wearing seat belts.
