(RALEIGH) -- Gov. Bev Perdue continued her push for state lawmakers to approve a temporary three quarters of a cent increase in the state sales tax to fund education. Perdue issued a statement on YouTube.

In the video she said cuts in the education budget have had a negative impact. "Local school districts from across North Carolina report that they've eliminated 1,700 teacher positions and nearly 2,300 teacher assistants," said Perdue.

Perdue vetoed a budget plan that let a one cent temporary sales tax expire as scheduled. But, the Republican led General Assembly voted to override the veto.

"The General Assembly has needlessly made drastic cuts that will permanently affect our children and actually, I believe, the future of this great state.  They did it to eliminate one thin cent, one copper penny from the state's sales tax."

Leaders in the General Assembly say they have no plans to consider the tax hike. "If the Governor would stop playing politics in proposing a tax increase she knows is not going to happen and get back to managing the affairs of the state, we could find more money for schools, which is something that we're desperately trying to do," said House Speaker Thom Tillis.

In her YouTube message, Gov. Perdue said the needs of our students can't wait. "We must act to reverse the extreme cuts that have already been made and to prevent things from getting even worse next year," added Perdue.
