(RALEIGH) -- Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue will not seek reelection, according to a report in the Washington Post. The reports sites two sources who confirm that the Governor will make the announcement on Thursday.
The Governor's office will not confirm any special scheduled announcement by the Perdue. The sources did tell the Post that she has labored over her decision.
State Rep. Bill Faison has been predicting since last fall that Perdue would not seek a second term. He has hinted that he might run for governor in the Democratic primary.
Democratic political strategist Brad Crone said a lot is in play now for governor in the Democratic primary. "I think the key players you're going to see in this are going to be Bill Faison, with a huge $500,000 investment in his campaign fund right now. I think Attorney General Roy Cooper will probably get in it and more than likely Walter Dalton," said Crone. Dalton is North Carolina's Lt. Gov.
Crone said it became apparent that Perdue would have had a uphill battle for reelection. "The Governor had just had a gut check. Her polls have been flat lined since June of 2009."
