(RALEIGH) -- GlaxoSmithKline and its N.C. GSK Foundation is giving a $2 million grant to the North Carolina Museum of Art to create a project called "The Big Picture" which aims to use art to enhance learning. Gov. Bev Perdue said the $2 million will present opportunities that teachers in this state have not seen for years.
"That's not a lot to you all but to those 165,000 school teachers across this state it's more than they've received for the last three years total to help them with arts education," said Perdue.
The program created by the grant is designed to teach concepts like investigation, communication and problem-solving across grade levels. "It will involve the training of teachers throughout the state of North Carolina in how to integrate the visual arts into the teaching of a variety of curricula, science, math, social studies, language," said NC Museum of Art director Larry Wheeler.
Gov. Perdue hopes this can revolutionize how students learn and expose more young people to the arts. The grant represents a multi-year commitment through 2016 and Perdue also hopes this partnership can turn into a national model for reshaping the classroom experience.
