(RALEIGH) -- North Carolina public school officials are asking local officials at all of the state's school districts to take a closer look at their bus fleet. The directive come after a bus in Charlotte caught fire two weeks ago.
Theo Helm, spokesman for the Winston-Salem Forsyth school system said they received the directive on Wednesday. "To check any of the buses that are similar to the one that caught fire in Charlotte. I think some of their inspections revealed a problem with some of the wiring and so they've asked all of the school systems across the state to check similar buses for similar problems," said Helm.
Specifically, state officials are asking all 115 school districts to check any Thomas Built Buses units that are about 13 years old. High Point-based Thomas Build Buses is expected to release an official report on what might have caused the Charlotte bus to catch fire, but local officials say they believe wires became worn and likely short-circuited.
