(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Congresswoman Renee Ellmers has sent a letter to the Department of Transportation stating her opposition to its approval of tolls on Interstate 95. Ellmers said in her letter that residents she represents would pay a disproportionately higher price since a major portion of the highway runs through her district.
Ellmers said increased gas taxes should cover the cost of roads. "We just had an increase of 4 cents a gallon on our gas tax at the state level so my question is where is this money going," said Ellmers.
The Department of Transportation says it needs tolls on I-95 to pay for a $4.4 billion widening project. Ellmers wants an economic impact study to determine the impact of tolls on the local economy.
