(RALEIGH) -- A crowd of opponents for a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage marched Thursday from the bell tower on the campus of North Carolina State University to the mall at the Capitol for a short rally.  It was there that the crowd was urged to vote against the amendment on May 8th.

Curtis Brown, executive director of the "Vote Against" project, said he sees a lot of misconception with this proposed amendment.  "A lot of people focus on it as the gay marriage amendment and it does happen to be a part of the same sex marriage portion, but it also affects all civil unions, domestic partnerships and most importantly it could really affect the domestic violence cases of any unmarried women," said Brown.

North Carolina is the last state in the Southeast without such a law that constitutionally defines marriage as being between one man and one woman. Those who are pushing for the "Amendment One" question on the May ballot have said they are fighting to help protect the traditional family.
