(FAYETTEVILLE) -- Fayetteville police officers shot and killed a man early Tuesday morning who witnesses said opened fire at a party late Monday night. Police spokesman Sgt. Todd Joyce said police were called to a residence on Blan Street.

Sgt. Joyce said a man tried to flee the scene. "During his attempt to flee the suspect struck an officer's patrol vehicle and then attempted to run over an officer who was standing outside his patrol vehicle," said Joyce. "The officers were ordering the suspect to stop and attempting to take cover and then responded with gunfire."

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.  The name of the suspect or the officers involved have not been released.
