(RALEIGH) – The executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party Jay Parmley resigned Sunday. This comes less than three days after reports e-mails first surfaced of a secret settlement between a junior State Democratic Party staffer and the party over sexual harassment allegations.
In his resignation letter Parmley states:
“Let me be clear: I have never harassed any employee at any time at the NCDP or in any other job.”
He states in the letter that several groups, including the conservative Tucker Carlson’s “The Daily Caller” blog and the Civitas Institute were spreading a “false and misleading story about a supposed incident of harassment at the NCDP.”
He further wrote: “even though I have not done anything wrong, it is clear to me that I need to move on.”
Jay Parmley joined the party last year as its top administrator.
Party Chairman David Parker accepted the resignation and said he believes there have not been grounds to fire Parmley. Other party leaders have raised concerns after emails circulating within the media mentioned the allegations.
WTVD spoke with Parker after a speech to the Durham County Democratic Party Saturday.
"We issued a statement. The statement was that several of our employees have left over the last couple of months - on mutually agreeable terms - and I can't say anything further about a personnel matter. And I will not," Parker told the Triangle television station.
"I cannot and will not comment on this case. Employment discrimination or harassment in the workplace or the work site is something Democrats are very concerned about, and rightfully so," he continued.
