(DURHAM) -- A pioneer in Olympic sports and higher education will be remembered with a funeral at Duke Chapel in Durham Tuesday. Dr. LeRoy Walker passed away Monday.
He served as track coach and later chancellor at North Carolina Central University in Durham. The current track coach, Michael Lawson, says Walker left a lasting impression.
"This university is probably using a lot of his philosophy and a lot of his wisdom to run the entire North Carolina Central University," he said.
Walker also served North Carolina Central University as chairman of the Department of Physical Education and Recreation and vice chancellor for university relations. Walker served as chancellor for the university from 1983-1986.
