(NEW YORK) -- Some of the jurors from the John Edwards case explained their decision, or lack of decisions in an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America. The jury found Edwards not guilty of one count of campaign finance fraud. But the judge declared a mistrial when the panel ended deliberations deadlocked on five other counts.
Jury foreman David Reccion said he thinks Edwards' attorneys managed to discredit former Edwards aide Andrew Young. "Unfortunately, that was probably the key part of the miss for the prosecution," said Reccion.
Speaking on the steps of the courthouse in Greensboro on Thursday, Edwards took responsibility for sins and awful wrongs, but said he did not do anything illegal. "I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong and there is no one else responsible for my sins," said Edwards.
"This trial exacted its toll, but it also showed that these day we want transparency and we want upstanding people who are going to be our leaders," said Elon University law professor Steve Friedland. Leadership matters, especially in today's age."
A source tells multiple media outlets that it is unlikely that the Department of Justice will retry Edwards.
