(RALEIGH) -- The families of murder victims joined Democratic legislators on Thursday in denouncing Republicans for rewriting the Racial Justice Act. The act allows death-row inmates to show that racial bias in jury selection affected their cases.
Victims' families want the act upheld, to ensure that the right people are convicted in murder cases. Representative Rick Glazier said Wednesday's vote by the GOP destroys confidence in the criminal justice system.
"It is wrong. It is wrong constitutionally. It is wrong morally and yesterday's (Wednesday's) decision was perhaps one of the saddest and worst decisions of any General Assembly in the history of North Carolina," said Glazier.
The vote to rewrite the Racial Justice Act passed easily in the House on Wednesday. It's expected to pass along party lines in the Senate.
