(RALEIGH) -- North Carolina Republican legislative leaders say they hope their final budget deal does enough to help public education and Medicaid to win the support of Democratic colleagues and Gov. Beverly Perdue. Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Thom Tillis on Wednesday released the details of their compromise state government spending plan for the coming year.
Tillis said they tried to plan for the unexpected. "If you take a look at reserves, you take a look at things that we have to possibly rely on should the economy not improve, should we have additional surprises, I think it is a fiscally sound budget, one I'm very proud of and very happy that we were able to reach accord with the Senate and prepared to send it to the Governor," said Tillis.
The compromise includes a 1.2 percent pay raise for public school teachers and state employees. About $250 million is restored for public school funding.
