(RALEIGH) -- The state budget agreed to by the General Assembly did not include money for compensating victims of the state's forced sterilization program, something that was disappointing to Mark Bold with the Justice for Sterilization victims project. He said this has been done before.
"We're hoping that they would recognize and take Ronald Regan's example. In 1988 he signed the Civil Liberties Act, which provided reparations, compensation, to 120,000 Japanese interment camp victims and history has applauded his efforts on both the Democrat and Republican side," said Bold.
Some lawmakers did state concerns that compensation for sterilized victims could open the door for reparations in other cases, such as slavery.
