(RALEIGH) -- Gov. Perdue has until Sunday night to decide whether she will sign, veto or not take action on the state's just over $20 Billion budget -- which says does not do enough for education. Sherri Strickland with the North Carolina Association of Educators said while the more than $20 billion state budget for the next fiscal year takes some positive steps, she said more could be done.
"We recognize that the budget continues to be insufficient to meet the needs of our public schools, especially after multiple years of budget cuts and knowing that going into this coming school year we will lose the federal EduJobs money that would have filled the hole," said Strickland.
She said the just over one percent pay raise being offered to teachers and other state workers was also a positive step but is less than what teachers deserve. Strickland said the raise amounts to about $30 a month for teachers who are just starting out.
