(RALEIGH) -- State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson is wasting no time addressing concerns raised by a recent audit that shows excessive mileage claimed by a Department of Public Instruction employee.
"Number one, we are taking disciplinary action against the individual who overstated the mileage," said Atkinson. "We do not have a tolerance for people in the department who do not follow the guidelines and the rules. We believe that it's important to set a model for other educators in the state."
An employee at the state Department of Public Instruction collected $3,270 in undeserved travel reimbursements over the 12 months ending June 2011, according to a state audit. The state Auditor's office found the employee had overstated miles driven by 6,474.
