(RALEIGH) -- The North Carolina chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union says they've received dozens of complaints from minorities across the state about being pulled over by the police for no apparent reason. Civil liberties lawyers say African-Americans are 77 percent more likely to get searched than whites. That number jumps to 96 percent for Hispanics.
"I've been pulled over for no reason at all," said Leeland Darks, a young black man from Raleigh. "I've been dragged out of my vehicle. I've been handcuffed, humiliated, harassed, guns drawn."
The ACLU says law enforcement in Wake and Cabarrus Counties are among the worst offenders. The ACLU has launched a "Put it in Writing" campaign to encourage minorities to file official reports if they think they've been profiled. The campaign was prompted after the findings of a recent UNC study.
