(CHAPEL HILL) -- A 21 member committee has the task of offering a recommendation to replace Holden Thorp as Chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill. The school's board of trustees Chairman, Wade Hargrove, will chair the committee and expects a good crop of candidates.

"This is one of the most attractive jobs for president of a public research university in the country," said.

Thorp reiterated his announcement last week that he will step down effective in June. His decision to step down came after a difficult last couple of years that brought investigations into both the athletic department and an academic department.  Thorp was not asked to step down.  He was actually urged to reconsider his decision by a number of groups, including the university's Board of Trustees.

Hargrove said he is not concerned that candidates will be scared off by the recent academic and athletic controversies. "There have been mistakes, there are problems, our goal is to address those problems and make sure that they really do not ever, ever happen again and to hold those persons responsible accountable."

The final selection for the job will be made by the UNC Board of Governors, with recommendations from the UNC-Chapel Hill search committee.
