(RALEIGH) -- With every tragedy, such as the shooting at the Connecticut elementary school, law officers will try to learn all they can, so they can apply that knowledge to future situations.
Wake County sheriff Donnie Harrison says that school resource officers do play a vital role in this day and time.
"Not only do they help us inside the school by talking to students, but we hope to build a rapport where if a student sees something that doesn't look right they can get to us quickly and we can go in to shut down mode."
Harrison says for now, there are NOT school resource officers in elementary schools.
