RALEIGH - Four NC House Republicans filed legislation on Wednesday that would allow law enforcement to check the immigration status of anyone they stop, and detain them for up to 24 hours.

ACLU-NC spokesman Mike Meno says House Bill 786 is a harsh, Arizona-style anti-illegal immigrant bill that will lead to racial profiling.

"So that gives them the very broad power to stop people based solely on suspicion and could open the door to stops based on skin color, appearance, and stereotypes rather than facts and evidence."

ACLU-NC Policy Director Sarah Preston says the Reclaim NC Act -- filed by Republican Rep's Harry Warren (Rowan), Jonathan Jordan (Ashe/Watauga), Brian Brown (Pitt) and Jeff Collins (Nash) -- sends a message that North Carolina is a hostile environment for aspiring citizens.
