Two big drug companies are joining forces in an effort to save the lives of millions of women and girls overseas.
GlaxoSmithKline and Merck have agreed to sell the HPV vaccine for as low as $4.50 a dose for a program that aims to vaccinate 30 million girls in 40 developing countries by the year 2020. Nina Schwalbe is with GAVI, a coalition of governments, charitable groups and drug makers coordinating this initiative.
"They don't have access to screening. They don't get pap smears and getting this vaccine is really the one chance they have at avoiding cervical cancer and a death sentence."
