Governor Pat McCrory is standing by the Common Core standards that are being taught to North Carolina students, but he wants to put the brakes on some of the testing requirements.

Eric Guckian, senior education advisor to the governor, says teachers and superintendents feel that they're overburdened by mandatory tests.

"This came out too fast, it was too many tests. It was close to 200 tests that came out last year. And it really kind of overwhelmed the teachers who are already doing one of the hardest jobs that we could ask them to do, which is educate our young people."

North Carolina can ask for a federal waiver that gives them time to make sure the test questions line up with the curriculum.
