DURHAM, -- A Duke University doctor says President George W. Bush will likely need ongoing treatment for the blockage that led to him having a stent placed in an artery on Tuesday.

Dr. Manesh Patel is the Director of Interventional Cardiology at Duke. He says patients with the president's condition need to monitor their health in the long term. Dr. Patel says you can avoid blockages by reducing your salt intake, controlling your blood pressure, exercising, and checking your cholesterol.

Patel says one million stent procedures are performed in the United States each year.

Bush, the nation’s 43rd presdent,  was been discharged from a Dallas hospital Wednesday.
