CHAPEL HILL -- Hall-Of-Fame Women's Basketball Coach Sylvia Hatchell is stepping away from the North Carolina Tar Heel bench after being diagnosed with Leukemia.
Hatchell released a statement through the school today, saying she hopes to be back to her sideline duties as soon as possible. Hatchell will be treated at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Care Center. Hatchell has led UNC to the 1994 NCAA Championship, three final fours, and eight Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Championships. Long-time assistant coach Andrew Calder will take over as the interim head coach.
